Motor vehicle accidents happen for a number of reasons: careless driving, hazardous road or weather conditions, distractions, drunken driving, inexperienced drivers, signal malfunctions, etc.
But sometimes the cause of an accident is the fault of a defective vehicle or a defective part. Other times, a defective vehicle may not have caused the accident, but may contribute to the severity of the accident or injuries, or may be the cause of death.
Although we like to think that our cars, trucks and SUVs are safe - and that if there is a known problem we can trust the manufacturer to recall the defective vehicle or defective auto part -- sadly that is not always the case. Or, we believe we can trust NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to act as our watchdog in testing and monitoring motor vehicles, but that cannot always be trusted either.
Thousands of innocent people are injured, maimed, disfigured, disabled or killed every year because of defective cars. Although it is horrifying to think that a vehicle manufacturer would put profits above the life or safety of the driving public, there are many examples of that situation, for example the Ford Explorer/Firestone tire travesty.
It should be incumbent on vehicle manufacturers to ensure that they 1) make vehicles that are safe to drive, 2) selling vehicles that are crash-worthy in the event of a collision or accident and 3) notify the public and NHTSA (National Highway Transportation and Safety Association) immediately of any known or suspected defects. The technology now exists to build safer motor vehicles and to instantly notify owners of any safety issues, but sadly, economics often override safety issues.
Defective vehicle accident victims and drivers are often unaware that a defective vehicle may be a contributing factor in an accident, and car manufacturers frequently deny the fact that the vehicle itself might be at fault in an accident. This website seeks to educate consumers about the many defects that can cause or contribute to motor vehicle accidents so the public can know the truth and seek proper redress.
